Elevating eye care for patients and optometry as a whole since 2012
Dr. Mark Schaeffer is a second-generation optometrist who spent countless hours in and around the family practice, Schaeffer Eye Center. When he graduated from University of Georgia in 2006 with a BBA in Marketing, he hadn’t decided on a career in optometry. He spent time running clinical trials for contact lenses and fell in love with patient care.
He went on to Southern College of Optometry and earned his doctorate in optometry in 2011. During his time at SCO, his externships were focused on expanding his knowledge of different clinical areas, Clayton Eye Center in Morrow, GA, and the Neuro-Developmental Sensory Enhancement Center in Plano, TX. After graduation, he went on to complete a residency in ocular disease from the prestigious Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida.
Since starting in private practice, his clinical focus has been on comprehensive eye care. From refractive technology to full scope optometric care, Dr. Schaeffer continues to learn and expand his knowledge base in order to take excellent care of his patients. In 2017, the practice was acquired by MyEyeDr.
He also began lecturing and consulting on contact lenses, ocular surface disease, practice management, and other ocular disease topics. He has been published on various topics from patient care, practice management, and diagnosis and treatment of ocular diseases.
Professionally, Dr. Schaeffer helped as a founding member of the Intrepid Eye Society, a group of thought leaders within the optometric community. He currently serves as Industry Chair within this society.
Areas of Focus
Primary care eye care
Every day eye care begins with the comprehensive eye exam. Dr. Mark Schaeffer takes an in-depth look at the whole picture, not just refractive error to provide the best care. By providing customized eye care, each patient leaves looking, seeing, and feeling their best.
ocular disease
Symptomatic or not, conditions that can affect the eye are paramount for detection and management. Staying up to date on new paradigms, innovative diagnostic technologies, and cutting edge therapies, allows Dr. Schaeffer to continue to provide the best in care for patients and educating other optometrists.
contact lens expert
Using the latest technologies and a tailored approach, patients are prescribed contact lenses to fit their lifestyle and vision needs. Serving as a consultant to major contact lens manufacturers, he lectures to colleagues about new lenses hitting the marketplace.
myopia control
Early intervention is key to help slow the progression of nearsightedness. By utilizing a variety of techniques, keeping children away from large shifts in refractive error not only helps them see better into the future but helps prevent the risk of severe vision threatening eye conditions.
ocular surface disease
Also known as dry eye disease, this common issue affects many patients that don’t even know it yet. Dr. Schaeffer educates patients on treatment and management that will make an impact on their lives. He also teaches other optometrists how to implement in their own practice.
staff training
The optometric staff is one of the key components to providing an excellent eye exam. By continuing to teach through in-office methods, the staff will continue to be advocates for our patients and help in their understanding of their own eye care needs.
